Sun, not exactly the staunchest support of Linux, is positioning itself to become the owner of the new Open Source kernel for the GNU operating system. Most people don't realize that the term Linux really only applies to the kernel; most distributions are considered the GNU Operating System when they include GCC and other packages owned by the Free Software Foundation.
